From design to delivery: a key milestone in CHASE!

In the CHASE project, we are investigating the combination of a high-temperature heat pump and latent heat thermal energy storage for the sustainable provision of renewable process steam for industry.

Last week, we reached an important milestone: the experimental module of a latent heat thermal energy storage system was delivered to the DLR Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics in Stuttgart. The photos show the delivery and placing of the storage module — an exciting step from concept and design toward experimental operation.

The storage system will be able to store thermal energy at 222 °C by utilizing the phase change of the eutectic mixture of Sodium Nitrate (NaNO3) and Potassium Nitrate (KNO3). This enables the demand-oriented provision of steam at pressures of up to 20 bar and temperatures of up to 212 °C. For charging, a temperature of only 232 °C is required, demonstrating the high exergetic efficiency of latent heat thermal energy storage.

Over the coming weeks, the storage system will be connected to the laboratory infrastructure, insulated, filled with phase change material, commissioned and virtually connected to a high temperature heat pump developed by DLR Institute of Low-Carbon Industrial Processes.
